Here’s a weird one …
Here’s a weird one for you. I was at a 50th Birthday and all we done was change between modern mainstream house and old 70’s rock. No transition just a quick intro on the mic and a straight cut. I tend to think about matching songs, my fellow DJ just plays what he wants but still in the same genre, but to me there’s still no flow. However; He still keeps the crowd dancing? But the really strange bit is when a 50 year old requests Sandstorm
dude where do you …
dude where do you get the money to buy all that stuff?
you have so right …
you have so right you have always right!!!!!!!!!!!!
That video was of …
That video was of great help. I really appreciated those explanations with your kind of humor.
If any of you new …
If any of you new DJ’s need help with anything
you can message me anytime on myspace
actually read the …
actually read the atmosphere in a club and selects the appropiate song !
So basically work on your musical knoledge aside from Dj’ing. The actual physical side of dj’ng is not important(unless your noticeably terrible). You’ll want to develop an ear for your own personal musical journey. What people respond to. You’ll find the same responses to elements whether its Rock, Hip Hop or Dance. Its all about dynamics. From Euphoric to Thumping, from silenced to roaring !
Just don’t get repetitive.
Its not always …
Its not always about having ‘that remix’ or all the latest tracks either.
I swear to God i can play any track from any musical genre in any set, as long as the bpm matches. But its how and when you bring it into play. It might not always work, it has to suit the moment/emotion.
Altough it involves human emotion and senses, it is actually just simple mathematics, but i wouldn’t want to even think about it, because that may just ruin it. Altough there are talks of computer automated clubs that…
Its this selecting …
Its this selecting that really makes a DJ.
I’ve known alot of top dj’s in different genres that technically are absolutely awful, but at the end of the day they have a natural ability to play the right tracks at the right time, and the crowd is happy ! When you go out to a club the last thing your concerned about is how long a Dj can hold a mix or his tricks, or that his beatmatching is slightly off.
Unless of course you’re specifically a follower of Dj’s and like to scrutinise rather than dance
a ‘roller’(a track …
a ‘roller’(a track that tends to carry a vibe on rather than build up and tear down). Know which tracks you can have faith in and which ones may take some work to fit in.
Now when your dj’ing and selecting tracks for a set, you should look at it as a whole, not individual tracks. As if your building your masterpiece. Remember the same track can sound different played in a different fashion or by another Dj etc.
As if it is your personal ‘edit’ of what music should sound like.
The trick is not to …
The trick is not to think, its more of a feeling. So make sure your enjoying yourself rather than worrying about it, and you can hear it in your music.
Now after going through each day as normal listening to hot radio shows, watching bands etc, you’ll want to get to grips with your music.
Learn each track. That doesn’t mean analysing each one, just quickly try to pick up the songs dynamics, how long the intro is, where the track dies off etc. What kind of vibe it has. Is it a crowd rocker or a
What you really …
What you really wanna do is, listen to alot of music. Not just the style you play, it can become pretty mundane and inward. Listen to some music you really enjoy and remember the vibe.
Sometimes inspiration can come from the most unsuspecting of places.
Now all the time your doing this, you may not realise but your building yourself your own musical ‘journey’ (without sounding too cliche).
Sub-conciously your gaining diferent elements and dynamics too your thought processes.
For the tougher …
For the tougher crowds, you’ll want to make it easier for them and play the best you’ve got, with instantly recognisable tracks. Something to warm them up. Something that doesn’t take 2 secs to think about before our dancing.
Now when it comes to building a set and track selection, your gonna need dynamics.
You don’t want to play the same kind of tracks the whole way through because it gets boring pretty quick. The same track can sound better or worst played by a different DJ.
Well i’ve been …
Well i’ve been Dj’ing for 16 years now and i’ve reached a sort of natural conclusion in Dj’ing.
I’ve Dj’d most styles of music at some time or another, but i’ll refer to Dance music.
First of all, the most important thing is the crowd. Make sure you know beforehand what style of music they are expecting to hear at this particular club. Now you wanna judge waht mood they are in. Are they well up for it or a little more docile ? This will determine the tracks you can play.
Hi, me and a friend …
Hi, me and a friend are starting to dj, but we cant find the right dj set, any ideas? we would like som speakers and a CD turntable, witch is the best that does not cost so muth?
I mean amateurs… …
I mean amateurs…you are the king! Keep it up, you are a very good dj. Coming from someone like me with such a critical ear is good feedback. Just watch the key of each track; it’s better to work with the CDJ 1000 mk3’s and a piano tuned in the proper key. lol I prefer them to the sl’s.
Yes, finally …
Yes, finally someone who can explain it proper. I think alike; too many armatures are uninformed of this concept.
Thanks so much for …
Thanks so much for this video! Am always worried about what tune am going to play next that I don’t really enjoy mixing! If you are djing to a crowd and have a set prepare, it’s hard to keep to it because you have a lot of people coming up to the booth and requesting a songs.
On the other hand …
On the other hand mobile DJ’s have it a little bit harder.. where each night is different than the last… they have to read the crowd a little better… but they can cheat out a little bit in the fact that they can memorize a few small sets… play them each night of the week at different venues and not get razzed about it…
Totally agree with …
Totally agree with you subjer0… but this is where knowing your crowd and knowing your music come in.
Take me for example… I DJ at a club and I will typically know what type of crowd is going to come in… I need to make sure that what I play isn’t exactly what they heard last weeks set. This is applicable to event DJ’s, and most club DJ’s… (A Hip Hop Club is going to have Hip Hop music… where a Rave will typically have electronica).
Really informative …
Really informative video. Great information.
But I think it’s not really good to fully plan your set before a gig without taking in consideration, the crowds reaction to your selection. Maybe the crowd your playing to might not dig deep house. If your set is nothing but deep house and the crowd doesn’t like it, your screwed.
