    John, you are correct. Find and replace works fine for simple replacements. However, to make calculated changes, or have the ability to AUTOMATE changes (so people who know nothing about Access can do it with the click of a button) you really need to know update queries.

    CTRL+H is the find and replace technique.

    find northeast
    replace with north.
    so???
    i will answer my own question: yes…the CTRL+H feature can be used. HOWEVER….the update query is also used for “updated all products that are currently $49.95 by 15%”
    …by the way…this instructor of these videos does a great job.
