WordPress 2.5+ Tutorial – How to Upload and Insert an Image

This beginner-level tutorial shows how to insert an image using WordPress version 2.5 or later. Inserting an image using WordPress version 2.5 or 2.6 is slightly different than inserting an image using WordPress version 2.3 or earlier. Versions 2.5 and 2.6 are essentially the same. Version 2.6 is the latest version as of July 2008.

Inserting an image that you have already uploaded to WordPress but haven’t used in a particular post or page is actually a bit confusing in version 2.5 or later. You need to be able to find the elusive “Insert into Post” button. It’s not obvious.

There are many other settings and features in the “Add media” tools in the WordPress editing interface. This tutorial covers only the most basic aspects of uploading and inserting an image.

I have uploaded a JPG which I can see in my gallery but there is no “insert into post” button and “save all changes” doesn’t seem to do anything. No matter what I do I can’t seem to get my image to go into my post! I have done it before, but now it beats me.

In WordPress 2.8 you have three options for image insertion: upload an image from your computer; select an image from the Gallery (images you have already uploaded); or insert a “gallery” of images (a group of images you upload together from your computer).

So I have to look through Wordpress’s cache to select the image to insert instead of just using the gallery? Lame.

    alexosh1234,
    Thanks for your question.

First, make sure the imaage is in one of the supported file formats like JPG or GIF or PNG. (Let me know if you need to know how to check that.)

Be sure to click SAVE CHANGES or INSERT INTO POST before leaving the Insert Image dialog box.

Are you using the Insert Image button or something else to upload?

Are you using WordPress version 2.5 / 2.6 or are you using something earlier?
