Man Killed in Washington Motorcycle Accident
A 42-year-old man was killed in a Washington motorcycle accident after his motorcycle rear-ended a pickup truck on Interstate 5. The man, who was a member of the Yakima Symphony Orchestra and director of a high school band in Chehalis, sustained fatal injuries in the crash. Officials said the collision occurred in foggy conditions on the 5 Freeway.
According to Washington State Department of Transportation’s (WSDOT) statistics, 81 fatalities and 501 serious injuries were reported in 2008 as a result of motorcycle accidents statewide. Of the 81 fatality collisions, 75 were driver fatalities. There has also been a significant increase in the number of people who own and ride motorcycles. WSDOT reports that there were 74,574 motorcycle owners in 1971. That number shot up to 227,371 in 2008.
