Hi Anki, Take ” Design of a new security protocol”.

When textbooks discuss the topic of ‘SQL statements’, authors sometimes prefix that term with ‘a’, and sometimes with ‘an’ (that is: ‘a SQL statement’ versus ‘an SQL statement’). So far I always assumed that in the former case, the author probably pronounced SQL as ’sequel’, and in the latter case SQL was pronounced as ‘es queue ell’.

When I discussed this with my g/f (and neither of us is a native speaker of th English language), she said that since the first letter of SQL is a vowel, it should be ‘a’ SQL statement, regardless of how you pronounce it. As I wrote, I think it’s ‘a’ sequel statement, and ‘an’ es-queue-ell statement.

I tried googling for "An SQL statement" and "A SQL statement", both embedded in quotes, but the (number of results) to both queries don’t suggest the correct answer.

Can anyone enlighten me? Please supply references…

All your reasoning and argument for both sides are completely sound, and make perfect sense. You’d have a really hard time convincing me that it matters which you use, since, as you stated, it is said either "sequel", or just the letters.

Personally, I say "sequel", so written, "a" would be correct, but just saying the letters SQL is also acceptable, so written, "an" would be correct.

Honestly, I don’t think it matters.

Design and implement data structure for all applications and programs.
Create queries to retrieve data as needed.
Design and implement user interface.
Create system documentation.
Write stored procedures for SQL Server
Creates backup procedure and physically backs up necessary data.
Evaluates hardware/software needs for business, makes purchases, keeps inventory.
Fixes/manages printers/copiers, refills toner cartridges to save money.
Assists users in functionality.
Buys new computer systems based on needs of user and their position.
Manages wireless/land-line bills, manages changes of circumstances (i.e. someone leaving the country, etc.) Negotiates refunds on usage charges.

Current Salary: $44,000 (No medical, dental, or vision coverage. No tuition reimbursement. 10 Vacation days/year starting after 1 year of working)

Is this fair? If not, what should I be making?

In fact there is evidence it represents Asherah who is the consort of the Hebrew god YAHWEH. Asherah is mentioned often in the OT. Without a female….there can be no life.

Here are a few items of particular interest:
– a Hebrew inscription found in an 8th Century BCE bench tomb near Hebron that Dever excavated and reported on in 1969 ("which was ignored by scholars for a decade"). Roughly translated, the inscription reads: "Blessed is Uriyahu by Yahweh. From his enemies he has been saved by his a/Asherah."(p. 132) Dever and other archeologists subsequently found Asherah and Yahweh paired on a number of other inscriptions (pp. 162-163).
– Male figurines were rare in ancient Israel in 10th-6th centuries BCE. (p.147)
– A mold for making female figurines was found in a 10th century BCE in a "Cultic Structure" which appears connected to "Asherah, the Lion Lady" (p 151).
– At least three types of figures representing Asherah:
(1) 10th-9th century BCE: Nude figures with long hair, usually similar to "the bouffant wig worn by the Egyptian goddess Hathor, whom the texts clearly equate with the Levantine Asherah as ‘Qudshu,the Holy One’." She is sometimes shown on or with a lion. (p. 176-178)
(2) 10th-9th century BCE: Figures, either nude or wearing skirts, holding either a drum or a cake.
(3) Late 8th-7th century BCE: Judean "pillar-based" figures with prominent breasts, whose lower body resembles a tree trunk. Many Israelite artifacts show either a tree or a downward-pointing triangle with two lions (or other animals) on either side. These were understood by the Israelites as being the Goddess Asherah ("the Lion Lady") accompanied by her animals. (Egyptian iconography shows a human being nursed by a tree with a human breast; another drawing shows a human-bodied goddess and tree as one.) (pp. 225-229).

Asherah, like Anat, is a well-documented goddess of the northwest Semitic pantheon. We remember that, according to the Bible itself, in the ninth century BCE Asherah was officially worshipped in Israel; her cult was matronized by Jezebel who, supposedly, imported it from her native Phoenician homeland. Other traces in the Bible either angrily acknowledge her worship as goddess (2 Kings 14.13, for instance, where another royal lady is involved), or else demote her from goddess to a sacred tree or pole set up near an altar (2 Kings 13.6, 17.16; Deuteronomy 16.21 and more). The apparent need for the hostile and widely distributed polemics against her worship constitutes evidence for its continued popularity. Linguistically, Margalit claims (1989), ‘Asherah’ signifies ‘[she] who walks behind’, displaying a prototypic if divine attitude that befits a wife (and is reflected in the Kuntillet Ajrud drawing).
I am looking for PROOF, not rhetoric. And Jesus Christ WAS NOT KNOWN to the Jewish writers of the OT, so the tree of life DOES NO represent Jesus Christ.

God said NOTHING to adam about not eating from the tree of life. The serpent told the TRUTH, as adam and eve gained knowledge (god apparently wanted to keep them ignorant) and they did not die.
dave–the tree of life is NOT a reminder of original sin. The tree was there all along, and had nothing to do with the events as they progressed through the myth. It only comes to light when god says :
And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." gen 3:22
