‘A’ or ‘An’ SQL statement?

Posted by admin on February 3rd, 2010 and filed under structured query language | 2 Comments »

Earlier today I was writing a short article on database programming, and it made me wonder… Well, let me explain the background first: SQL is short for Structured Query Language, and many people pronounce it ’sequel’.

When textbooks discuss the topic of ‘SQL statements’, authors sometimes prefix that term with ‘a’, and sometimes with ‘an’ (that is: ‘a SQL statement’ versus ‘an SQL statement’). So far I always assumed that in the former case, the author probably pronounced SQL as ’sequel’, and in the latter case SQL was pronounced as ‘es queue ell’.

When I discussed this with my g/f (and neither of us is a native speaker of th English language), she said that since the first letter of SQL is a vowel, it should be ‘a’ SQL statement, regardless of how you pronounce it. As I wrote, I think it’s ‘a’ sequel statement, and ‘an’ es-queue-ell statement.

I tried googling for "An SQL statement" and "A SQL statement", both embedded in quotes, but the (number of results) to both queries don’t suggest the correct answer.

Can anyone enlighten me? Please supply references…

All your reasoning and argument for both sides are completely sound, and make perfect sense. You’d have a really hard time convincing me that it matters which you use, since, as you stated, it is said either "sequel", or just the letters.

Personally, I say "sequel", so written, "a" would be correct, but just saying the letters SQL is also acceptable, so written, "an" would be correct.

Honestly, I don’t think it matters.

SQL and its importance?

what is structured query language and its importance?

SQL (Structured Query Language) is a computer language aimed to store, manipulate, and retrieve data stored in relational databases.

How much should I honestly be making at this job?

Posted by admin on December 21st, 2009 and filed under structured query language | 2 Comments »

I work as the only on staff IT worker in a business that holds about 15 employees. I consider myself a hybrid, in the sense that I fill both a Database Administrator and System Analyst position at once, but feel I am strongly underpaid. Since I’m the only one with technical knowledge in the business, there is no one knowledgeable enough to really evaluate what I do and how much I should really be getting paid. I plan to take these answers to my evaluation in a couple days to hopefully make some changes. Here is what I do (that I can think of off the top of my head):

Design and implement data structure for all applications and programs.
Create queries to retrieve data as needed.
Design and implement user interface.
Create system documentation.
Write stored procedures for SQL Server
Creates backup procedure and physically backs up necessary data.
Evaluates hardware/software needs for business, makes purchases, keeps inventory.
Fixes/manages printers/copiers, refills toner cartridges to save money.
Assists users in functionality.
Buys new computer systems based on needs of user and their position.
Manages wireless/land-line bills, manages changes of circumstances (i.e. someone leaving the country, etc.) Negotiates refunds on usage charges.

Languages I use: SQL, VB, C/C++, Java

Current Salary: $44,000 (No medical, dental, or vision coverage. No tuition reimbursement. 10 Vacation days/year starting after 1 year of working)

Is this fair? If not, what should I be making?

Thank you for your help.
Oh yes, it’s also a 7:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. job, Monday – Friday, no breaks, 30 minute lunch each day.

it kind of depends on where you live, and how long you’ve been working there/how much prior experience you have

it does sound maybe a little on the low side, but i’m sure there are people out there doing the same work for less money

Christians, What does the Tree of Life represent?

Posted by admin on October 18th, 2009 and filed under structured query language | 12 Comments »

Where is your historical/archeological evidence for your claim that the tree of life represents "immortality"?

In fact there is evidence it represents Asherah who is the consort of the Hebrew god YAHWEH. Asherah is mentioned often in the OT. Without a female….there can be no life.

Here are a few items of particular interest:
– a Hebrew inscription found in an 8th Century BCE bench tomb near Hebron that Dever excavated and reported on in 1969 ("which was ignored by scholars for a decade"). Roughly translated, the inscription reads: "Blessed is Uriyahu by Yahweh. From his enemies he has been saved by his a/Asherah."(p. 132) Dever and other archeologists subsequently found Asherah and Yahweh paired on a number of other inscriptions (pp. 162-163).
– Male figurines were rare in ancient Israel in 10th-6th centuries BCE. (p.147)
– A mold for making female figurines was found in a 10th century BCE in a "Cultic Structure" which appears connected to "Asherah, the Lion Lady" (p 151).
– At least three types of figures representing Asherah:
(1) 10th-9th century BCE: Nude figures with long hair, usually similar to "the bouffant wig worn by the Egyptian goddess Hathor, whom the texts clearly equate with the Levantine Asherah as ‘Qudshu, the Holy One’." She is sometimes shown on or with a lion. (p. 176-178)
(2) 10th-9th century BCE: Figures, either nude or wearing skirts, holding either a drum or a cake.
(3) Late 8th-7th century BCE: Judean "pillar-based" figures with prominent breasts, whose lower body resembles a tree trunk. Hundreds to thousands of these have been found.(pp. 179-180) [To get to link, click on "cancel" in response to query about foreign language. The Israel Museum and others often label an artifact of Asherah, Astarte. ]
– In the mid 1980s CE, Ruth Hestrin, a curator at the Israel museum, Jerusalem, pointed out, after examining a ceremonial vase excavated in Lachish, that in Israelite iconography both the tree and the downward-pointing triangle are not just symbols of, but are literally interchangable with, the Goddess Asherah. Many Israelite artifacts show either a tree or a downward-pointing triangle with two lions (or other animals) on either side. These were understood by the Israelites as being the Goddess Asherah ("the Lion Lady") accompanied by her animals. (Egyptian iconography shows a human being nursed by a tree with a human breast; another drawing shows a human-bodied goddess and tree as one.) (pp. 225-229).
This evidence can be found in Did God Have a Wife? Archeology and Folk Religion in Ancient Israel by William G. Dever, (Eerdmans 2005) hardcover.

Asherah, like Anat, is a well-documented goddess of the northwest Semitic pantheon. We remember that, according to the Bible itself, in the ninth century BCE Asherah was officially worshipped in Israel; her cult was matronized by Jezebel who, supposedly, imported it from her native Phoenician homeland. Other traces in the Bible either angrily acknowledge her worship as goddess (2 Kings 14.13, for instance, where another royal lady is involved), or else demote her from goddess to a sacred tree or pole set up near an altar (2 Kings 13.6, 17.16; Deuteronomy 16.21 and more). The apparent need for the hostile and widely distributed polemics against her worship constitutes evidence for its continued popularity. Linguistically, Margalit claims (1989), ‘Asherah’ signifies ‘[she] who walks behind’, displaying a prototypic if divine attitude that befits a wife (and is reflected in the Kuntillet Ajrud drawing).
I am looking for PROOF, not rhetoric. And Jesus Christ WAS NOT KNOWN to the Jewish writers of the OT, so the tree of life DOES NO represent Jesus Christ.
thats DOES NOT…:)
light–there was no choice between the trees in the garden of eden. God LIED when he told adam he would die on the day he ate of the tree of knowledge, which he didn’t. God said NOTHING to adam about not eating from the tree of life. The serpent told the TRUTH, as adam and eve gained knowledge (god apparently wanted to keep them ignorant) and they did not die.
dave–the tree of life is NOT a reminder of original sin. The tree was there all along, and had nothing to do with the events as they progressed through the myth. It only comes to light when god says :
And the LORD God said, "The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever." gen 3:22

The "us" god is referring to are the other male gods in the Hebrew pantheon, as there were many.

Neat.

Hi

I have got the following information, i need help with my English and the structure of the CV, I want to apply for a job at Maplin which is an electronic store.

I am a software engineering student, i have worked for one year at iceland foods, I studied software development at college, before going to university to study software engineering, which is what i am currently doing.

You can add anything else that you might feel will help me make my cv attractive to the employer.

I finished school 4 years ago, and when i did my work experience i was descriped as " name is a quiet but attentive person, respectful and willing to help, i have recieved positive feedback from the team regarding name"

so maybe you could add that somewhere.

so far i have written this, but it needs a change, if you could help me with the English, and just make it look attractive to the employer.

A hard working, reliable and enthusiastic person who thrives on sociability and fellowship. Outgoing with strong and effective organizational skills, good team player, takes direction well and able to use own initiative, Possesses good computer Skills .

I mean i have done web design, programming, but i dont think they are interested in that, which is why i have just mentioned good computer skills.

Resumes must now contain far more than a list of duties or abilities.

Your job description must show challenges and solutions, your actions and their results, e.g. "Designed program to speed sales contact entry increasing call volume by 25%"

Since you are a student the resume must be about how your skills can benefit the specific company you are applying to and the job you are trying to fill. Match your skills to the job posting.

There are seriously millions of people who have been out of work for months so every opening is a high-level competition. You cannot even get an interview without a top-notch resume.

Careerbuilder.com has a great free resource section with short informative columns on resumes, cover letters, interviews, the whole process.

Good Luck!

Ask the employer if he has special requirements in the CV. If he has, follow them.

If he hasn’t, google CV format and choose one to use yourself.

A student of BCA final semester submits his project proposal to SOCIS, IGNOU, New Delhi. In a month’s time, he will receive communication from SOCIS about its approval. In case it is disapproved, student will be informed about the reason for its disapproval. In case it is approved, the student will be communicated about the same. After the student receives approval letter, he can submit project report to SR&E, IGNOU, New Delhi which will inform the student about the schedule of project viva to the student in due course. Then, the student attends for project viva and waits for the Grade Card from IGNOU which contains the result of his/her Project Work.

Students are required to study this problem and suggest the appropriate mechanism for computerizing the operation. The computerization should be in such a way that IGNOU can attend to the queries of the student regarding the receipt of project proposal. Approval/Disapproval of Project Proposal, Receipt of Project Report and Schedule of Project Viva.

You should do the project as indicated below.

1.Design several levels of DFDs.

2.Suggest appropriate data structures, tables for each module.

3.Identify the number of modules for computerization.

4.Write the process logic for each module nearer to any programming language.

5.Suggest various input screens and validation checks for various types of input.

That’s lot of work, may be you can contact a programming expert at website like http://askexpert.info/ to help you code it.
